Why Won’t My CGM Stay On? A Simple Tip That May Help

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) have been life-changing for many people living with diabetes. Devices such as Dexcom G7, Dexcom G6, and Freestyle Libre 3 allow people to monitor glucose levels more closely without repeated finger sticks.

These devices can provide valuable information about blood sugar trends, helping people make better decisions regarding food, activity, medications, and insulin.

But there is one frustration I continue to hear over and over again:

“My sensor won’t stay on.”

After doing research and reading many online testimonies, I found that this is a very common issue across almost every CGM brand. Many people report sensors lifting at the edges, loosening early, or falling off completely before the expected wear period ends.

This can be incredibly frustrating.

Not only are these devices expensive, but when a sensor falls off early, it can interrupt glucose monitoring, create stress, and leave people feeling discouraged.

Unfortunately, when most CGM sensors come off early, they usually cannot simply be placed back onto the skin. The applicator uses a single-use insertion mechanism to place the tiny sensor filament under the skin. Once used, that applicator cannot be reused.

This means that if the sensor falls off, the sensor is often no longer usable.

In many cases, the manufacturer will replace a sensor that fails early or falls off before the expected wear period. However, replacement sensors are typically mailed to the user rather than immediately available.

That can leave someone without continuous glucose monitoring for several days while waiting for a replacement to arrive.

For many people living with diabetes, especially those using CGM data to guide food choices, medications, insulin dosing, and daily decision-making, even a short interruption can be stressful.

Why Does This Happen?

There are several reasons a CGM sensor may not stay in place:

  • Sweating or living in hot, humid climates

  • Oily skin

  • Exercise or heavy physical activity

  • Sensitive or delicate skin

  • Adhesive irritation

  • Skin not fully dry before application

For very active individuals, those who perspire heavily, or those with fragile skin, keeping a sensor in place can be a real challenge.

Living in South Texas, I understand how heat and humidity alone can make adhesion difficult.

A Simple Product That May Help

One product I have personally seen help many people is Skin Prep by Smith & Nephew.

Skin Prep is commonly used in ostomy and wound care to help protect the skin while improving adhesion. It creates a thin protective barrier on the skin.

This can help in two important ways:

  • Protect delicate skin from irritation and breakdown

  • Help the adhesive stick better so the sensor stays in place

My Experience As A Nurse

I have recommended Skin Prep to many patients over the years who struggled with sensors or medical devices not staying in place.

Many of them have reported great success.

I have seen it help people with:

  • excessive sweating

  • fragile skin

  • active lifestyles

  • repeated sensor failures

I have also seen the difference personally in my own home.

My husband was having difficulty with his CGM staying in place. His sensor would sometimes loosen early, especially in hot weather or during activity.

Since using Skin Prep before applying his sensor, he has had much better success.

His sensors now stay in place much more reliably—even during hot weather, yard work, and daily activity.

How We Use It

This is the method we use:

1. Wash the area with soap and water

2. Dry thoroughly

3. Clean with alcohol and allow to fully dry

4. Apply Skin Prep and allow it to become tacky

5. Apply the sensor as directed

*One important tip:

Avoid placing Skin Prep directly where the sensor filament inserts into the skin. Leave a small center area clean if needed. Michael does not do this, but everyone's skin is different.

Important Note

I have not received any compensation or payment to promote this product.

I am simply sharing information that may help others based on:

  • research

  • online testimonies

  • patient feedback

  • nursing experience

  • personal family experience

Final Encouragement

Sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest difference.

If you have been frustrated with your CGM falling off early, please know this:

You are not alone.

Many people struggle with this exact issue.

Sometimes a simple adjustment in skin preparation can improve both comfort and wear time.

Don’t give up.

Finding the right routine may make all the difference.
